Charles V, of the House of Habsburg, is Holy Roman Emperor, King of Spain and sovereign lord of the majority of the provinces in the Netherlands. He eventually rules all seventeen of them, ten in the southern Netherlands (present-day Belgium) and seven in the north (the present-day Netherlands). His reign sees the emergence of Protestantism (a movement whose adherents have to hold their services in the open air).
